Invisible was an Argentinian progressive rock band formed 1973 in Buenos Aires by Luis Alberto Spinetta. Guitarist and vocalist Spinetta formed the band following the breakup of Pescado Rabioso. The original trio lineup comprised Spinetta (vocals, guitar), Carlos "Machi" Rufino (bass, vocals) and Héctor "Pomo" Lorenzo (drums). Machi and Pomo also both played in Pappo's Blues band at the same time. The band expanded into a quartet with the inclusion of guitarist Tomás Gubitsch in 1976. Many music critics regard Invisible on-par with the greatest of the guitar-based English progressive rock bands of the '70s, with the superb compositions, vocals and guitar skills of frontman Spinetta. In their short history, they only delivered three studio albums and a handful of singles, but all their releases are regarded as classics. The albums, Invisible (1974), Durazno sangrando (1975) and El jardín de los presentes (1976) are highly recommended, as is the archival live recording En vivo Teatro Coliseo 1975, released in 2022, and the 2020 best-of compilation Obras cumbres from 2020. Their third and final album El Jardín, regarded by many as a masterpiece which quickly became a best seller, was the only album to feature Tomás Gubitsch on lead guitar. It also featured a guest appearance by bandoneón virtuoso Rodolfo Mederos on one track. Following the breakup of the band in 1977, Luis Alberto Spinetta continued with a highly successful solo career, plus he formed the bands Spinetta Jade (1980-85) and Spinetta y los Socios del Desierto (1994-99). Tomás Gubitsch himself released several excellent solo albums and became a member of the band Lágrima. Invisible created highly accomplished soft psychedelic prog that occasionally lapsed into old-school heavy rock. Without the use of synthesisers or keyboards, Invisible give us prog with a gentle rock heart rather than an unemotional calculated mind. Although their music is so accomplished, the band did not enjoy a great deal of success outside their homeland Argentina.
